The month of July has been highly focused on Bass Fishing! I’ve been hosting guided tours on lakes all over the Kawartha Region such as Rice, Sturgeon, Buckhorn, etc. and the bite has been great on all of them! The trips have resulted in good quantities of fish as well as some really good quality bass as well. There are two primary techniques my guests and I have been using to catch these fish. Firstly, when fishing areas where the fish are feeding on crayfish a tube jig is a great presentation to use to trick the fish in these zones into biting. Bottom contact is key! Slowly work the tube along the bottom through the rocks and weeds just as a crayfish does naturally. Add in the odd pop or scoot to entice a following fish, simple and incredibly effective. The second technique is a wacky-rigged “senko” or stick worm. This presentation is all about the slow fall of the bait. It’s mimicking a dying baitfish or bug sinking in the water column. As the bait falls and gets closer to the bottom, fish in the area will see it and simply cannot pass up such an easy snack. This technique is also great to use around weed cover and other types of structure like stumps, lily pads, rocks, etc.
Both techniques are fished using medium power, fast action spinning rods. Paired with 2500 size spinning reels, spooled with 10lb Power Pro braided line and equipped with a short fluorocarbon leader leading to the lure.
