It’s Muskie opener again in the Kawartha Lakes! The first week of the season is always very exciting. Trying out new baits bought through the off-season, checking all the potential spots from previous years in search of new fish and hunting elusive giants seen in the past hoping they’re still around for another season. I have been busy chasing these fish around on a few different bodies of water in the Kawarthas. Pigeon Lake and Buckhorn Lake are always two of my favourites to try first. They both have a high population of muskies as well as some really big fish for the area. It’s always interesting to see which baits excel each season compared to others. Last season was dominated by throwing bucktail spinners in a variety of blade size and colours. This season so far, rubber baits such as swimbaits and tubes have been what the muskies seem most interested in. Several fish have been landed while using Waterwolf Lures Shadzilla Jr.s in natural patterns like perch and walleye which has been a go-to bait of mine for Kawartha muskies for years. The largest fish landed this season so far is a thick 41.5″ Buckhorn Lake muskie, caught on a shoal just outside a spawning bay. The fish ate a 7″ Waterwolf Lures Gator Tube in Black Betty pattern and was caught by my guest Danielle. Her first ever Muskie.
